THE CHALLENGE

  • In Africa, the livelihoods of communities, specifically our youth and elderly, have been compromised by decades of underdevelopment and lack of access to resources.
  • This situation was made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic in which many role models and bread winners were lost.
  • Whilst existing youth empowerment programs can potentially lift most of the problems that South Africa is facing, the success rate of current programs is low due to numerous factors.
  • These include the focus on fiscal intervention and less on mentorship and education, limited youth empowerment activities, poor engagement with youth in decision-making processes, and low-levels of youth participation in the programmes.
  • It is necessary to enhance mentorship as it cultivates a sense of community, education, growth, as well as a sense of purpose, belonging and connectedness in the elderly to the world around them.

Volunteering is an act of heroism on a grand scale. And it matters profoundly. It does more than help people beat the odds; it changes the odds. – Bill Clinton.
